ABCs

(Airway, Breathing, Circulation). I was going through the new ATLS (Advanced Trauma Life Support) texts and then my mind began to wonder. In any trauma we always want to ensure that the airway is open, that we are breathing and that there is circulation. I couldn't help but have the TV on in the background as it eases my ADD and of course if was all about the election. I began to wonder what would be the ABCs that I would want in politics as the result of this November. In fact the question was so bothering to me that I even brought it up in the surgeons lounge the next day. The discussion was worthy of our founding fathers! While everyone was debating, one of our older urologists happened to walk in and said three things that shut us all up. He said, "term limits, The Fair Tax, and line item veto".

We were amazed, he then added "its easy, I want the things that every career politician fears!"

Good morning Throckmorton!

I'd love to have been a butterfly on the wall in your surgeons's lounge for that conversation! :)

I remember hearing the FairTax discussed on talk radio when driving around in between clients but never pursued reading further on it.

So at 06:45 before & my coffee you've got me thinking about some deep topics. :)

However, I confess I had to google and so I just copied this. I did read though.

The FairTax:

* Enables workers to keep their entire paychecks
* Enables retirees to keep their entire pensions
* Refunds in advance the tax on purchases of basic necessities
* Allows American products to compete fairly
* Brings transparency and accountability to tax policy
* Ensures Social Security and Medicare funding
* Closes all loopholes and brings fairness to taxation
* Abolishes the IRS

It sounds good but not being financially enlightened, I would have to really hear the pros and cons. A good debate would be nice. :)

What do you about the fair tax?

I think term limits might be good because perhaps they will try harder to effect change for the better. The proposal for a 6 year term with no possibility of re-election sounds interesting because they could spend all of the presidency focusing on their job without worrying about re-election.

I don't know anything about the line item veto but will have to check it out.

Interesting post!

I caught the Morning Joe show for the first time on MSNBC this morning. I like Joe Scarborough. I remember after Katrina hit, he and his wife and people from their church were driving supplies into Mississippi (he lives in Pensacola)
and every night he was on TV demonstrating that everyday people were getting supplies in-why couldn't the government. He was a republican congressman. I like him because he seems like a straight shooter.

Anyway, I liked the format of his new show (guess not so new anymore) and they were having an interesting discussion about campaign strategies of the two candidates.

Your colleague's observation is interesting. If his statement is true then one would have to conclude that the politicians aren't working for "us-the people" after all. Hmmm... How do we remedy that?
